Mission: The mission of the Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks of San Mateo County is two-fold:

  1. To assist park rangers to maintain the parks and conduct educational programs through the development and management of community volunteer efforts.
  2. Volunteer Horse Patrol

The San Mateo County Volunteer Horse Patrol (VHP) was founded in 1987 by a local group of equestrians who wanted the county to benefit from their frequent riding and knowledge of the beautiful trails in San Mateo County. The volunteers serve as the "eyes and ears" of the county parks. Equestrian teams (horse and rider) ride the trails while park staff attend to the more heavily used park areas.

The VHP helps the park service by observing and reporting trail use and conditions. Volunteers also inform and assist visitors by answering questions, handing out maps, and advising visitors of park regulations and etiquette. Park visitors and the park service both benefit from the visibility and general assistance provided by the volunteers.

Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

Fitzgerald Marine Life Reserve in Moss Beach is recognized as one of California's most diverse intertidal regions. The Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Life Refuge is a volunteer organization founded in 1987 to preserve and protect this unique natural resource, to encourage educational and research programs there, and to support educational and interpretive services for schools and the public.

To accomplish the above, some Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Life Refuge study marine biology and intertidal interpretation and then lead tours through the tide pools or serve as roving interpreters, answering visitors' questions or pointing out the marine animals inhabiting the reef. These volunteer naturalists include adults, high school students and even Junior Naturalists, age 12-15, who are graduates of the Junior Ranger and Junior Naturalist programs sponsored by the Friends. Other volunteers assist in scientific studies being carried on at the Reserve. Some actively participate like those who observe harbor seal behavior during the spring pupping season; some help record the data. Others write grant applications to secure funding for research projects or educational programs. The just-completed comprehensive guide, The Natural History of Fitzgerald Marine Life Refuge, was the work of volunteers, as is the quarterly newsletter, Between the Tides, with many educational articles as well as information on events and activities at the Reserve.

Volunteers participate in a variety of educational programs sponsored by Friends of Fitzgerald, including workshops on marine life for teachers or the public, classroom visits, a summer science camp, or special-interest tours of the intertidal zones. Preserving and protecting, supporting research and educating, the Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Life Refuge contribute to the well-being of this world renowned resource.
